A NIE number (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is a basic document required for foreigners staying in Spain. What is a NIE number?

A NIE number is a unique identifier assigned to every foreigner staying in Spain for more than 3 months or undertaking legal actions (e.g. buying a property). It is a  number, which identifies you in the tax, banking and administrative systems.

Why is a NIE number necessary?

A NIE number is needed for, among others:

1. Buying a property in Spain - without a NIE, you cannot sign a notarial deed.

2. Opening a bank account - required when opening an account in a Spanish bank.

3. Signing an employment contract – your employer must register you for tax and social security.

4. Starting a business – when registering a company in Spain.

5. Registering a car – if you plan to buy a vehicle in Spain.

How to get an NIE number in Spain?

1. Choosing where to apply

You can get an NIE number in:

• Spain – at the local police office (Comisaría de Policía).

•  at the Spanish Embassy

2. Preparing documents

To get an NIE number, you will need:

• A completed EX-15 form – available online on the Spanish Ministry of the Interior website.

• A valid passport or ID card and a copy of it.

• A document justifying the need for an NIE number (e.g. a property purchase agreement, employment contract, letter from a bank).

• Confirmation of payment of the administrative fee (Modelo 790 form) – the fee can be paid at a Spanish bank.

3. Visit to the office or consulate

• In Spain: Book an appointment online on the website of the relevant office in your province (e.g. Alicante, Torrevieja). Submit the completed documents and pay the required fees on site.

• In Poland: Submit the documents to the Spanish Embassy. The procedure may take longer than in Spain.

4. Receiving the NIE number

After submitting the documents, the NIE number is usually ready within a few working days. In the case of a large number of applications, the waiting time may be longer. The NIE number will be printed on an official certificate.
